New, immersive exhibition, described as “an app you can walk thru,” opens Memorial Day weekend at HMNS

Key Points:

  • Clickbait: a digital obsession transforms the museum exhibition space into a physical digital world, inviting guests to explore the algorithms and systems that shape modern life online.
  • Through 18 large-scale interactive installations, visitors of all ages can engage with themes like social media, digital identity, deepfakes, and AI in a way that is visual and thought-provoking.
  • The exhibition encourages digital literacy and meaningful family conversation by making the invisible architecture of the internet tangible and interactive.

HOUSTON, TX — A headline engineered to provoke. An image designed to stop you. An algorithm that knows you better than you know yourself. We scroll through them every day and this May, the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) invites you to step beyond the screen.

Clickbait: a digital obsession, opening May 23 (members see it first May 22) and designed for visitors of all ages, transforms the museum gallery into a walkable digital world. Through 18 large-scale installations, the exhibition pulls back the curtain on the invisible systems shaping our lives: social media, deepfakes, personalization, and AI. This is not just a screen; it is the screen made physical.

“While we hope to draw visitors in with this novel approach – an exhibit that experiences you as you experience it – our goal is for our guests to leave with a better understanding of social media literacy and how the choices you make with your devices inform the world around you,” said Nicole Temple, Vice President of Education at HMNS. “This is the perfect opportunity for families to open the door for deeper conversations about entertainment and safety in the digital landscape.”

A Journey Through Three Digital Zones

The exhibition unfolds as a narrative journey through three interconnected zones, each designed to reflect a different dimension of life in the digital age:

ME: The opening section places visitors at the center of their own digital experience. It explores the digital footprint and how personal choices, user agreements, and preferences shape what we see online.

WE: The second zone expands to the collective experience. It examines how online communities form, how connection happens across distance, and the ways data can link, sort, and group strangers across the web.

THE WORLD: The final zone turns to the broader impact of technology on society. From AI-generated deepfakes to algorithms that shape news and perception, this section asks visitors to consider what is real in a world that is uniquely filtered and personalized.

Exhibition Highlights & Interactivity

Clickbait is designed for ages 8 and up, making complex technology accessible through play and personal discovery. Featured installations include:

  • Registration — “The First Click”: The journey begins at touchscreen stations where visitors create a digital presence for the day. This opt-in moment allows the exhibition to recognize each visitor as they move through the gallery, mirroring the platforms people use every day.
  • Talk to Me — “The Power of the Voice”: Step behind a larger-than-life projected face to experience the pull of the digital stage. As you speak, a cascade of real-time likes and hearts responds to your presence, reflecting our desire to be heard and affirmed.
  • Guess Me — “The Mask of Anonymity”: Visitors are paired with a mystery partner elsewhere in the museum. Through digital masks and altered voices, this reveals how identity and anonymity shape how we connect online.
  • The Maze — “Navigating the Map”: This physical maze turns the invisible mapping of our digital world into a hands-on experience, exploring how technology interprets the paths we take.
  • Your Digital Summary — “The Reflection”: Upon exiting, visitors receive a custom highlight reel inspired by their interactions. This offers a transparent look at their digital trail. Once the visitor exits and chooses whether to scan their QR code, the system resets.

Reflection, Not Prescription

While the title Clickbait is intentionally bold, the exhibition is grounded in curiosity rather than judgment. Instead of telling visitors what to think about technology, it creates an immersive space where they can engage directly with systems that usually remain hidden. By bringing these complex systems into the museum, HMNS gives families a rare opportunity to step back and examine the digital habits and “invisible architecture” shaping their daily lives.

Clickbait: a digital obsession is on display at HMNS beginning May 23 (members see it first May 22). For ticket prices or more information, visit www.hmns.org or call (713) 639-4629.
